Aronia / Black Chokeberry - Bare Root Plant (Bundle of 4)
Aronia melanocarpa
Aronia, or Black Chokeberry, is a native shrub that tolerates a range of growing conditions and produces highly nutritious edible berries. The common name, Chokeberry, comes from the fruit's astringent taste, but when made into a syrup, the flavor is quite tasty.
The shrub can reach 8 ft tall in ideal conditions, but rarely grows above 6 ft, making it easy to harvest. It is one of the first shrubs to flower in the spring, with delicate white flowers that can be spotted amidst the brown landscape. While Black Chokeberry is fond of wet soils, it also grows well in sandy well-draining areas.
Many Aronia plants are cloned cultivars grown primarily for large fruit production. Our plants are grown from local-ecotype seeds, so the fruit may not be as large as some Aronias you may find in gardens; however, these plants are particularly suited for Maine’s climate and for feeding native wildlife. The seedlings are each approximately 6 inches tall and sold in bundles of 4.
Hardiness: Zone 4-8
Soil: Average to poor
Light: Full sun to part sun
