Butternut - 2nd year Bare Root Tree

$20.00
sold out

(Juglans cinerea)

Butternut is a nut tree with a native range that just reaches our area in south western Maine, but has the potential to shirt Northward. Unfortunately, Butternut Canker has been devastating this tree for a few decades now, spread by the fungus, Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum. Here at Whaleback Nursery, we are still trying to grow this important woodland species, hoping that one of our seed grown saplings will have the requisite genetics to survive into old age. So far, we’re happy to report that after one year of growth, the saplings have gained 2-3 feet and look very happy and healthy.

When mature, Butternuts produce a bumper crop of oily, tasty, nuts and are found as understory trees in our local sugar maple, beech forests.

Please take a chance on these beautiful native trees and do your part to help restore them into our forests. We want to get these into your hands, so we are selling them for less than our other trees!

Our plants are 2nd year bare root trees between 2’ and 3’ tall. These trees typically fruit around 20 years or age and will continue to do so for decades.

Hardiness: Zone 3-7

Soil: moist and well drained

Light: Full sun
