Black Elderberry - Bare Root Shrub & Cuttings
(Sambucus canadensis)
One of our favorite plants to grow at the nursery, Elderberries grow showy leaves and flowers before producing large clusters of edible fruits. Loved by humans and animals alike, the berries are delicious when cooked and believed by many to be extremely good for you. Elderberries thrive in dry to wet soils under full sun. The suckering stems make for great natural fences and provide shelter for many beneficial insects.
Elderberries easily grow from cuttings provided that one set of buds is stuck into fertile, damp soil with another set above ground. Elderberry cuttings are a great way to establish larger numbers of plants quickly while planting an established shrub will provide flowers and berries sooner and grow larger faster.
The Black Elderberry is not self-fertile, so a second plant is needed for pollination although wild plants will do the trick if they are close by.
