Seaberry / Sea Buckthorn - Bare Root Plant (Bundle of 4)

Sale Price: $18.00 Original Price: $20.00

Hippophae rhamnoides

Seaberry or sea buckthorn is not native to our part of the world, but it is well worth growing in any garden or food forest for its nitrogen-fixing properties and extremely nutritious fruits. Native to Eurasia, it has been used as food and medicine for millennia, and recent studies have identified over 200 nutritional and bioactive compounds. These compounds have shown anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties, making it one of the most potent plant medicines you can grow.

The plant itself is a spiny shrub that grows up to 8 ft tall and will frequently sucker and form large colonies. Like other members of the Eleagnus genus, it has shiny bark and silvery leaves. Symbiotic, nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the root systems make Seaberry an excellent companion plant for orchards and food forests.

Seaberry is dioecious, meaning both male and female plants are required for fruit development. Our seedlings are unsexed, so we sell our plants in bundles of 4 to increase the chances of receiving both sexes. Each seedling is approximately 6 inches tall.

Hardiness: Zone 3-9
Soil: Average to poor
Light: Full sun to part sun
