Self Heal - Seeds & Bare Root Plant
(Prunella vulgaris)
Self Heal is a lovely little wildflower that you have probably seen mowed to the ground countless times. When allowed to grow unhindered, it may grow to around a foot tall with a gorgeous inflorescence spike that flowers from the bottom to the top over the course of months. Later in the fall the spike turns brown and papery and numerous small seeds will self sow. A member of the mint family, it can be found all over the world in many habitats as long as it is not too dry and hot. Its common name also hints at this plants medicinal uses. Native Americans used the plant in a variety of ways to treat everything from acne to gynecological aid, but its most common use may have been as a remedy for sore throats. Like many of the plants we grow, we harvest the leaves and make a simple tea which tastes great and surely is improving our overall health.
