Onoclea sensibilis
This is one of our favorite ferns around the nursery. The large, bright green fronds have a beautiful structure, and once established, the large colonies appear to all wave together in the wind. This fern thrives in moist soils around bodies of water, but will do well in average garden soils so long as it does not fully dry out. As its name implies, this fern is extremely sensitive to frost and will wilt and turn brown after the first frost of the season.
Ferns are a crucial part of any temperate ecosystem, so add this one to your gardens!
Hardiness: Zone 3-9
Soil: Wet to average
Light: Mostly Sunny to part shade
