Hypericum prolificum
This lovely little near-native shrub is an absolute magnet for bumblebee species when it flowers in mid-summer. The brilliant yellow flowers persist for weeks and turn into equally prolific seed pods that give this shrub a nice appearance throughout the winter. A smaller, slow-growing plant, it will likely only reach 4 ft tall and wide at its peak. It grows in average to poor soils in dry areas and is salt-tolerant, making it an excellent plant for roadsides and other tricky areas. This plant is closely related to Common St. Johnswort (Hypericum perforatum), which has a long history of medical use for treating depression, but I have found very limited research on if this plant does too.
